What are the benefits of an Internal Penetration Test?

An internal network penetration test simulates an attack from inside an organisation’s network, as if it originated within the network or had already bypassed the outer defences. This type of penetration test serves as a secondary layer, aiming to identify internal security gaps before cybercriminals can exploit them.

Common Internal Network Vulnerabilities

LLMNR / NBT-NS Poisoning
Legacy name resolution protocols like LLMNR and NBT-NS can be exploited by attackers to intercept authentication requests and capture password hashes. These hashes can often be cracked or relayed to gain unauthorised access to internal systems.
Weak Password Policies
Insufficient password complexity, length, or rotation requirements make user accounts susceptible to brute-force and password-spraying attacks. Weak policies significantly increase the likelihood of credential compromise across the network.
LDAP Signing & Channel Binding Misconfigurations
Without LDAP signing and channel binding enforced, authentication traffic to Active Directory can be intercepted or relayed by attackers. This weakness is commonly exploited to escalate privileges and compromise domain accounts.
Default or Shared Credentials
Systems or applications left with default, weak, or shared credentials provide attackers with an easy route to unauthorised access. Shared credentials also make it difficult to trace malicious activity back to a specific user or device.
Insecure Service Account Configurations
Service accounts with excessive privileges, weak passwords, or no expiration policies are attractive targets for attackers seeking to escalate privileges or move laterally within the network. Misconfigured service accounts are a common route to full domain compromise.
Local Privilege Escalation Weaknesses
Misconfigurations, unpatched software, or insecure permissions on local systems can allow attackers to escalate from standard user access to full administrative control. Once achieved, this often provides a stepping stone to further compromise the wider network.

We send your company a Project Proposal

Based on the requirements, we will then assemble a project proposal and quote and agree on a schedule for conducting the security assessment. Our proposal document will include the following information:

We start the Penetration Testing

The Penetration Testing starts. A member of our Penetration Testing team will liaise with a member of your company throughout the entire testing process. You will be the first to know if we have any questions or concerns. Our testing team will be on hand throughout the penetration test lifecycle to answer any questions or concerns. Our tester will:

You receive your Report and Remediate Issues

A Penetration Test is useless without a well-written report. Our reports are written in plain English, concise, and thoroughly documented. The Penetration Test Report is typically furnished within 5 days after the testing phase is complete. If you are interested in seeing an example report, please contact our team.

Each report details the following:

We test the remediation efforts and update the Report

At Sencode, we offer free retesting for every Penetration Test we conduct. You fix the issues; then we will verify they can no longer be exploited by an attacker. Our team will arrange a mutually suitable time to conduct the retest, after the remediation efforts have taken place. Our tester will follow these steps:

Deliver a Security Testing Certificate

Our clients receive a testing certificate that can be shared with partners and customers, showing that their company takes security seriously. The certificate and document are designed to be easily digested by third-party suppliers, the document removes the technical details and can be safely distributed.

The Security Testing Certificate is available on request, after the retest has been complete. The security certificate shows:

Frequently Asked Questions: Internal Pen Testing Services

Review our frequently asked questions to find the answers you’re looking for. Our FAQ provides clear and concise responses to common inquiries.
Can an internal penetration test be done remotely?

Yes. Internal penetration testing can be carried out remotely via a dedicated device or a VPN connection to your internal network, eliminating the need for testers to be on-site while still delivering the same depth of assessment. Sencode can also send a dedicated machine to your corporate premises, eliminating the need for a member of our team on-site.

Is an internal pen test enough on its own?

Generally not recommended on its own, since internal testing shows what could happen if an attacker gets inside, but without an external test you won’t know how exposed your perimeter is in the first place.
